Course overview

Aim: with this course SAE is committed to prepare the future journalists, the digital storyteller, in an optimal way. The study path Crossmedia Communication and Production is designed to specifically meet the requirements of a continuously evolving profession such as the one of journalism. The course offers students a study of basic journalism practice, workflow, and the technical knowledge needed in digital photography, camera operation, film editing, image editing, audio recording and editing, authoring, podcasting and blogging.

The Crossmedia Communication and Production course is expertly structured to teach you the technical skills that will enable you to produce high-quality digital content as well as nurture your writing talent and software work-flow practise. You will learn industry techniques in the areas of camera operation, digital photography, film editing, image editing, audio recording and editing, podcast and videocast authoring and blogging.

Practical classes and hands-on practical time are supported by a theoretical understanding, giving students thorough knowledge of a broad range of multimedia- and online production-related issues and career opportunities. A successful graduate will be able to produce high-quality digital content, the successful completion of the course is awarded with the SAE Institute Crossmedia Communication and Production Diploma.

Course Content of the Crossmedia Communication and Production Course at SAE Institute

Digital Journalism is introducing fresh ways of storytelling, primarily through the technical components of new media. Using a combination of video, audio, photography and text the digital journalist is able to create a comprehensive, interactive account. Many of us use social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Hyves, or start our own blog, to let the world know what we're thinking. If you are looking to turn your passion for writing and sharing into a profession, our new course in Crossmedia Communication and Production (Digital Journalism) will equip you with the skills you need to work in the fast paced environment of contemporary editorial departments. No publication can stay competitive in today's market without a strong online presence, including podcasts, blogs and videocasts. Consequently, journalists must now be able to integrate traditional journalistic skills with technical skills that enable them to create and immediately publish material in a variety of different media that captivates the digital audience.

Assessment method

Practical:

  • students submit a number of prescribed practical exercises throughout the course
  • students undertake a substantial project in the field, within the guidelines set by the college

Theoretical:

  • students sit theoretical progress examination at regular intervals over the duration of the course
  • students submit a written diploma assignment on a subject of the student's choice (subjecs must be approved by SAE Academic Staff)
  • students sit a final theory examination
